Product description
This velvet fabric features a pomegranate design, one of the most widely used motifs in Renaissance luxury silks. Other floral elements were popular in this period as well – palmettes, lotus flowers, thistles, and pine cones. The decorative units on our silk velvet are arranged horizontally, creating a rich and harmonic pattern. The symbolic meaning of the pomegranate as the bearer of fertility, prosperity, and immortality, so popular in Renaissance Italy, probably came to the west from Persian culture. This reproduction is modeled on a pattern from the TextileAsArt online database.
Our reproduction of this historical velvet fabric is woven from 100% pure, natural silk, making it an absolute rarity among today’s patterned velvets. The base is made of a sturdy silk duchesse satin and the pile that forms the pattern is also pure silk. The fabric has a firm hand. It is tightly woven and sturdy and its satin base has a delicate pearly sheen. Because it is 100% silk, it is quite light, with a soft touch, and breathable. Reproductions of period fabrics are perfect for sewing historical costumes but they can also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
If you plan to use a lining, we recommend pairing this silk fabric with a silk lining.
Care
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. Washing may cause the fine plush to tangle and break. If you must iron velvet, never do so on a hard surface; instead, hang the fabric and steam iron from the back side.
