Product description
This historical reproduction is drawn from the pattern depicted on the robes of Saint Catherine of Alexandria by the Italian painter Giovanni del Biondo. This Egyptian princess and later Catholic saint is symbolized by the spiked wheel on which she was tortured by the Emperor Maxentius for refusing to renounce her faith. The circular arrangement of palmettes forming the central motif recalls the wheel. A stylized letter S at the center may represent the Latin word sancta, holy. The wheel motif is framed on both sides by paired birds with long tail feathers, their wings spread (phoenix in flight). The remaining space is filled with floral motifs, lotus flowers.
A preserved textile fragment with a very similar pattern exists. However, it was most likely a copy of the above design.
The source for this pattern is the painting Saint Catherine of Alexandria with Donors and Scenes from her Life by Giovanni del Biondo, which is currently on display at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy.
This historical brocade reproduction is a Jacquard weave with a pure silk warp and a weft of rayon and lurex. It catches the eye with its striking color and dramatic, raised surface, an effect achieved by alternating weaves. Premium material makes this brocade very sturdy, yet soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable.
Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.
We recommend lining this brocade with a natural material such as silk or fine linen.
Care
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. Iron on the back side on a synthetic setting.
